Le voyage des ombres (The journey of shadows), 29/06/2024 to 31/05/2025, Musée de la Vallée, Barcelonnette, France

The exhibition “Le voyage des ombres” (“The Journey of Shadows”) by artist Jean-François Gavoty, both visual artist and sundial maker, plunges us into the phantasmagorical world of the artist who also crossed paths with the collections of traveler and naturalist Émile Chabrand.

“Le voyage des ombres” (The Journey of Shadows) is an artistic game immersed in the scenography and collections of the Musée de la Vallée, with two polarities in tension: linking the profound and implicit qualities of sundials (at the heart of the sundial artist's activity in Ubaye), with a visual narrative inspired by the story of Émile Chabrand (1843-1893); an emblematic figure, former emigrant to Mexico, world traveler (1882-1883) and collector whose career the museum presents.

Drawings, instruments and sculptures take us into the phantasmagorical world of the artist who grew up in Ubaye, and whose work has also incorporated naturalized specimens from the Chabrand collection.
