Since 2009, the IAC / Frac Rhône-Alpes has hosted the event Rendez-vous, renamed Jeune création internationale in 2019. The programme brings together the Lyon Biennale, the IAC / Frac Rhône-Alpes, the Musée d’art contemporain – macLYON and an art school from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, this year the École supérieure d’art et de design Grenoble-Valence (ESAD). Ten emerging artists and artist duet – five artists from the regional scene and five artists from the international scene – are invited to develop a project for the 18th Lyon Biennale. This format enables in-depth dialogue with curatorial and technical teams, providing each project with production conditions adapted to the scale of the event.
The regional scene is selected through an open call for projects addressed to artists connected to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with a focus on the quality of proposals and the maturity of artistic research. The international selection is developed in consultation with curators and partner institutions, encouraging the circulation of practices and the strengthening of professional networks. Through in situ residencies, and with a strong emphasis on the creation of new works, the programme enables artists to develop original projects.
This continuity between production and presentation places their work within a process-based approach, echoing the thinking of artist Robert Filliou, for whom art was less about the object itself than the process behind it.
