As wetlands, which ensure a rich dialogue between land and rivers, are constantly being reduced and disrupted by human activities, and as rivers are being concreted over and their meanders broken up, how can we return water to the land and bring water back to life? What if beavers, which have had close ties to rivers for millions of years, could help us? How can we draw inspiration from beavers to regenerate the water in rivers and on land? A program inspired by the book by Suzanne Husky and Baptiste Morizot, Rendre l'eau à la terre – Alliances dans les rivières face au chaos climatique (Actes Sud, 2024), with the screening of two short films by Suzanne Husky and an observation walk along the banks of the Rhône. In partnership with FNE Rhône and SMIRIL.
On the front page of the Brattleboro Reformer, the local newspaper: “Eager Beavers. Pumpkin and Pye start a family,” an article by Patti Smith, and in the picture, two beavers on a riverbank. A town interested in the life of a pair of beavers is the work of Patti Smith, a singular naturalist of extraordinary gentleness.
In this short filmed portrait, we get a glimpse into Patti's world: she shares how she has changed her behavior to get on the same level as the many animals she encounters. She introduces us to Pumpkin and Pye and shares her fascination with beavers. Patti Smith is a naturalist at the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center, an author, and a certified wildlife rehabilitator. She wrote The Beavers of Popple's Pond.
