IAC is recruiting a new director!
Created in 1982 and based on an exemplary partnership between the French State and the Regions, the Regional Contemporary Art Funds (FRAC) are a major component of public policy to support the creation and dissemination of contemporary art in France. These local artistic and cultural facilities are dedicated to building up collections that are representative of current international art, and to disseminating and transmitting art to a wide and diverse public.
The “Fonds régional d'art contemporain” (FRAC) label was instituted by the law on freedom of creation, architecture and heritage of July 7, 2016 and was awarded to existing FRACs on July 1.
The two FRAC in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (the FRAC Auvergne association in Clermont-Ferrand and the Institut d'Art Contemporain association in Villeurbanne) are recruiting their managers. As part of this process, and in order to promote the same dynamic of dissemination in the region, the missions of the two FRAC will be considered in relation to each other, in order to promote complementarity, the sharing of priority objectives, mutual enrichment through acquired skills (sponsorship, off-site activities, etc.), the implementation of action methods according to common criteria, and a spirit of permanent consultation.
With this in mind, applicants are expected to present a project specific to the establishment for which they are applying, while taking into account the desire to bring the two institutions closer together:
- in terms of acquisitions, programming and audience policy: aim for shared objectives and concerted deployment of these missions;
- in the area of communications: to implement a joint strategy;
- in terms of governance, overhaul the statutes, in particular to enable each of the FRAC to be reciprocally represented on the governing bodies.
With specific reference to the IAC, applicants are asked to work on defining an artistic and cultural project that clearly and forcefully reflects the missions of the regional contemporary art fund.
Pair applications (one candidate for the FRAC Auvergne and one candidate for the IAC declaring themselves together) are accepted.
The FRAC Auvergne
Created in 1985 to carry out its mission of supporting artists and promoting access to contemporary art for all, the FRAC Auvergne, an association under the law of 1901, has built up and developed a collection of over 1,000 works, whose identity is clearly defined around painting. Since 2004, it has broadened its focus to include questions relating to the status of the image and the links between the history of painting and that of photography and cinema.
Its collection is distributed throughout the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, which also includes the Institut d'Art Contemporain (IAC), located in Villeurbanne and awarded the FRAC label in 2017.
The FRAC Auvergne offers more than twenty exhibitions outside its walls, many of them in schools, in addition to 3 annual exhibitions inside its walls. Our public relations department prepares and accompanies this regional policy of awareness-raising activities, working closely with partners who host works from our collection.
Since 1998, the association has had a Patrons' Club that is unique in France (some fifteen companies), contributing a third of the operating budget. Through their involvement, corporate patrons support the FRAC in its missions and contribute to the cultural and economic appeal of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
The FRAC currently employs 11 FTEs. It has an average annual operating budget of 1.2 million euros. The building it will occupy in Clermont-Ferrand from 2026, the Halle aux blés, will be made available by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region.
The FRAC Auvergne is supported by the DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Conseil Départemental du Puy-de-Dôme, Clermont Auvergne Métropole and the Ville de Clermont-Ferrand.
The association is governed by a Board of Directors, with equal representation from the State (DRAC and Délégation générale à la création artistique) and the Region, as well as a representative from the Conseil Départemental du Puy-de-Dôme, Clermont Auvergne Métropole, the City of Clermont-Ferrand and associate members representing patrons and qualified personalities.
Supported by its public partners, in 2017 the FRAC Auvergne embarked on an ambitious project to relocate to the Halle aux Blés, an emblematic building erected in the 18th century and listed as a historic monument. Located in the heart of the city on an axis that links the main cultural operators, and close to the region's most important schools and higher education establishments, the site offers a highly favorable context for visiting young audiences and students in particular.
The renovation of the Halle aux Blés, a 2,900 m2 building designed to house the FRAC Auvergne's new artistic and cultural project, has the ambitious aim of making it an integral part of the dynamic regional distribution network, encouraging a mix of audiences and decompartmentalizing disciplines to make it an essential, lively and accessible venue for art and culture.
The Region, which owns the building, aims to finance exhibitions of international scope at La Halle aux Blés (to complement those of the FRAC Auvergne), which, within the framework of a multi-year agreement, will be placed under the artistic responsibility of the director (without excluding the occasional use of external curators). The new management team will be expected to engage in a dialogue with the Region on this subject, including budgetary aspects.
The Institut d'art contemporain
Created in 1978, the Institut d'art contemporain has historically carried out the tasks assigned to a Fonds régional d'art contemporain and a centre d'art contemporain. Its missions combine support for artists and creative work, with access to contemporary art for the general public. This dual vocation characterizes the establishment's unique position in the French contemporary art scene.
It owns a collection (2,000 works to date) which it distributes through exhibitions, production of works, artist residencies, research, publishing, transmission and mediation with different audiences. Thanks in particular to the distribution of its collection, it is also a tool at the service of the region and its inhabitants.
The Institut d'art contemporain mainly deploys its activities at its Villeurbanne site (2,750 m2, including 1,200 m2 of exhibition space) and throughout the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its collection is distributed throughout the region, which also includes the FRAC Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand.
The IAC currently employs 12.6 FTE, including 1.8 FTE on fixed-term contracts. It has an average annual operating budget of 1.3 million euros. The building it occupies is made available by the City of Villeurbanne. A project to reconfigure the building is currently underway.
The IAC is a member of the Platform network (network of regional contemporary art funds) and d.c.a (French association for the development of contemporary art centers). It is also part of the regional network for the dissemination of plastic and visual arts.
The Institut d'art contemporain is supported by the DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and the Ville de Villeurbanne.
The association is governed by a Board of Directors, with equal representation from the State (DRAC and DGCA), the Region and the Ville de Villeurbanne, as well as qualified personalities and individuals from civil society.
