La Grande Folie – Johanna Rocard / Brave Compagnie – Performer: Nina Berclaz
Extending the themes explored in THE (PSYCHO)SOMATIC ZONE, La Grande Folie sets in motion the stories of women deemed excessive, hysterical, or unruly. Through skin, fabric, and movement, the performance explores what resists, overflows, and transforms bodies when social norms begin to waver. La Grande Folie is a duet—a close combat between a dancer, Nina Berclaz, and a costume: a spinning cape. Within the folds of the fabric lies a question: what does the costume do to the body, and what does the body do to the costume?
Through the figure of the woman who spins, a plural and fragmented history unfolds — that of women and their dancing bodies in public, physical, and digital spaces. Accompanied by the memories of Frau Troffea, the spider-like dancers of the tarantella, the women of the Salpêtrière, Loïe Fuller, Britney Spears, and other women labelled mad or unclean, La Grande Folie pays tribute to the possessed, the enraged, those who disrupt, those who act, and those who unsettle the established order.
